The Bridge between Teaching and Learning:
Personalised Learning
Today’s education systems are predominately a class room system structured by age. Its aim or purpose is the education of everyone, regardless of age, ethnic or aptitude. The system has benefits and limits. One of its weaknesses lie in the lack of time and resources it can give to the individual student without losses to the remainder of the class. Assistant teachers and many other tools were and are implemented to help teachers to improve overall classroom performance as well as ensuring slower students are catered for and they do not fail. Despite all these tools the teacher still often has to make the judgement of whether or not to invest the time into individual learners. Raise A Child (RAC) Personalised Learning is the solution.
RaiseAchild (RAC) Personalised learning can be divided into whole class, group and individual teaching to pass on knowledge, to instil key learning skills and to accommodate different paces of learning. At the heart of personalised learning must be the systematic and explicit development of learning skills and strategies across the curriculum. Furthermore, to enable pupils to understand themselves better, as learners, and therfore take greater control of and responsibility for their learning, transferring and applying a widening repertoire of learning approaches in different subjects and contexts.
Principles of personalised learning:
To create a successful personalised learning experience we must acknowledge that enabling every child to achieve their full potential, whatever their abilities, whatever their talents may be, is the first step in achieving excellence. To create such high quality teaching that is responsive to the different ways students achieve their objectives is what we have specialised in.
We determine with each school and teacher what they will need to deliver personalised learning most effectively, and how best to invest their resources and deploy their staff to cater for the learning priorities of their pupils and according to their own circumstances. Implemented and carried out effectively, it will have definite tangible benefits for all involved in the learning process.
The following are likely, although not exclusively, to be the essential features:
For pupils:
- Materials, subjects catered to enable them to gain maximum gains
- Increasing their willingness to take responsibility for their own education
- Addressing individual’s needs without loss of focus on class’s needs
- Improvement of inference aptitude
- If they start to fall behind in their learning, they will be able to identify their weaknesses and how to improve, and will be given additional support to help them get back on track quickly
- By increasing aptitudes and subsequent achievements the morale, respect for others, self-esteem and pride in oneself and group/school increase. A reduction to desire truancy and destructive behaviour and bullying is reduced
For parents and carers:
- By educating them in key aspects of learning they will be able to support their children
- Understanding the child’s personal development allows them to encourage their child's learning and in planning their future education
- They will be confident that their child is receiving a high quality education and be able to actively engage in their child’s education
For teachers and support staff:
- They will have the confidence that every learner will succeed in their subjects and life
- They will have access to real-time quick assessments to assist troubled learners at once rather than allowing for a build up of losses in their personalised learning experience
- Improving their lesson planning and allowing them to prepare lessons tailored to catch the slowest student without compromising on pace of teaching
- It will enable them to evaluate what the individual needs to succeed
For schools:
- They will be able to focus and align their efforts to have a consorted push towards highest standards
- They will be able to reduce the number of truancy, authorised absence, bullying and failed learners
- They will be able to accommodate learners of any background or varying aptitudes and aspirations
- It will enable them to take remedial actions on all failed or slow students and turn them around into winning students
- They will be able to demonstrate their determination for every young person's needs to be assessed and their talents developed through a variety of teaching strategies
- They will have the confidence to innovate and develop approaches to personalising learning that meet the diverse needs of their pupils
